What Is Fluoride?
A fluoride treatment is one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Depending on your oral health, fluoride treatments can be performed every 6 to 12 months. They can be rinsed or applied through a varnish during your routine dental cleaning.
Fluoride prevents the development of acid and fortifies tooth enamel making it more resistant to dental cavities. Although fluoride occurs naturally in many foods and water sources, there are situations when the amount present is insufficient to effectively prevent cavities. To further prevent tooth decay, we provide fluoride treatments for our patients.
Fluoride varnishes are great for people of all ages. To lower the risk of cavities, patients should regularly receive fluoride varnish. Fluoride may also be advantageous for adults who have sensitive teeth and a higher risk of tooth decay.

The Process Of Fluoride
The purpose of fluoride varnish is to increase the quantity of fluoride in your mouth, hence preventing cavities. Fluoride gel or a rinse is typically applied to the tooth surface. The enamel is then strengthened and rendered more resistant to dental cavities as a result of the fluoride’s absorption into it.
Fluoride levels in in-office fluoride treatments are substantially higher than those in toothpaste and fluoride rinses, making them more effective at fortifying enamel and preventing decay.
Types Of Fluoride
Applied Fluoride
The teeth receive direct application of fluoride. It is typically applied in our office and can be found as a gel, foam, varnish, or rinse. The enamel is then strengthened and made more resistant to deterioration as a result of the fluoride’s absorption.
Integrated Fluoride
Internally administered fluoride treatments include systemic fluoride. We obtain systemic fluoride from food, water, and supplements. In order to strengthen the enamel and increase its resistance to decay, systemic fluoride enters the bloodstream before being absorbed into the teeth. Children are the most frequently treated with systemic fluoride because they are more likely to benefit from the added protection.
What To Expect During Fluoride Application
Your dentist will administer a fluoride gel or foam to your teeth. After leaving the gel or foam on for a while, it is rinsed off. In order to help the fluoride solution penetrate the enamel of your teeth, you can also be instructed to bite down on a tray or mouth guard containing the solution.
To ensure that the fluoride is properly absorbed into your teeth, you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking after the application.
It’s crucial to remember that fluoride treatments cannot replace practicing proper dental hygiene. To get rid of plaque and germs that might cause tooth decay, you should still brush and floss your teeth twice a day. Additionally, it’s critical to schedule routine examinations and cleanings with your dentist to maintain the strength and condition of your teeth.
