Deep Cleaning
Deep cleanings are referred to as “Scaling and Root Planing”. If you develop gum disease called periodontitis, you will need scaling and root planing for your teeth to remove tartar and inflamed gums. This deep cleaning procedure will chip off the tartar that has hardened to the surfaces of your teeth and the roots causing your gums to swell. This will help protect your gums as well as prevent the loss of your teeth, gums and bone.
Our dental hygienist will perform this treatment and can be done in just one visit. Some patients will split the treatment into two visits.
What Happens During Scaling And Root Planing?
During scaling and root planing, our dental hygienist will clean below your gum line to completely remove tartar from your teeth including the roots. To minimize any discomfort or pain, our dental team will go ahead and numb your mouth like a local anesthetic.
Our dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to perform scaling and ship away at the tartar on your teeth above your gum line. A water spray will wash away the residue and flush the plaque from the gum pockets. Any remaining pieces of tartar will then be scraped away manually with a scaler.
During root planing, it’s the same process except under your gum line to take care of your roots. Our dental hygienist will gently push aside the gum tissue and expose the roots of your teeth, chipping away at the tartar below the gum line. Sometimes we may place an antibiotic medication directly into the gum pockets.
What Happens After Scaling And Root Planing?
Plaque and bacteria are much less likely to stick to the surfaces of your treated teeth. As your gums will heal the inflammation will decrease and your healthy gums will reattach more firmly to your treated smooth tooth roots.
During follow up visits, our dental team will measure your pockets surrounding your gum tissue to ensure proper oral health. Taking care of this now will keep you from losing teeth, gum tissue and bone.
